The visual coupling between neighbors in real and virtual crowds

چکیده
Many models of crowd behavior are based on local interactions between pedestrians, but little is known about the actual mechanisms governing these interactions. In Experiments 1 and 2, a participant walked with three human ‘confederates’ or a virtual crowd of 30, while the heading direction or speed of a subset of neighbors was manipulated. In Experiment 3, real crowds of 16 or 20 walked together in a swarming scenario. We find that pedestrians are unidirectionally coupled to neighbors ahead of them, the influence of multiple neighbors is linearly combined, and their weights decrease with distance. © 2014 The Authors. Follow the leader: visual control of speed in pedestrian following.
When people walk together in groups or crowds they must coordinate their walking speed and direction with their neighbors. This paper investigates how a pedestrian visually controls speed when following a leader on a straight path (one-dimensional following). To model the behavioral dynamics of following, participants in Experiment 1 walked behind a confederate who randomly increased or decreas...
متن کاملThirdspace: The Trialectics of the Real, Virtual and Blended Spaces
This article aims to redefine the concept of Thirdspace and make a trilateral relationship between the three concepts of real space, virtual space and the user. To do so, not only the concept of Thirdspace has to be redefined, but also a new understanding of virtual space as a relatively independent space is required. This three-sided relation requires a new understanding of the relationship be...
متن کاملThe PAG Crowd: A Graph Based Approach for Efficient Data-Driven Crowd Simulation
We present a data-driven method for the real-time synthesis of believable steering behaviors for virtual crowds. The proposed method interlinks the input examples into a structure we call the Perception–Action Graph (PAG) which can be used at run-time to efficiently synthesize believable virtual crowds. A virtual character’s state is encoded using a temporal representation, the Temporal Percept...
متن کاملEffect of Virtual Reality During Periodontal Treatment of Patients with Anxiety
Background and Aim: Various methods have been used to reduce the patient's anxiety during dental treatment. In recent years, there has been an increase in behavioral research regarding virtual reality (VR) and virtual world as it offers more immersive images and works by blocking out real-world stimuli (visual, auditory or both). This study aimed at assessing the impact of VR on working conditi...
متن کاملInvestigating the Educational Capabilities of Virtual Reality Technology Based on the Evaluation of Visual Perception Components
Since virtual reality technology is increasingly and widely used in various fields, and in particular education, it is necessary to examine the audience’s perception obtained using this technology in order to study its instructional capabilities. So, the present study aims to investigate the instructional capabilities of the virtual reality system using a comparative analysis of environmental p...
